# Text Replacement Shortcuts Most keyboards in modern operating systems allow you to setup Text Replacement shortcuts. - In [[macOS]] it is in System Preferences -> Keyboard - I haven't figured out backup and restore of this on macOS devices yet, since it lives in an odd part of the preferences, and it doesn't like to have the settings changed not-through-the-ui. - On Android, it varies by keyboard, for example Gboard has the settings: - For GBoard you can even back them up so you don't need to recreate them on a new device when you upgrade or change phones. This can be quite handy for more than you'd expect! # Addresses Particularly on my phone, I have folks ask my address when visiting, or I need to fill it in on a form or something. Browser auto-fill is helpful there in some cases, but in other cases like text-messages it's no good. So what do I do? I come up with a quick shorthand and use that for a text replacement shortcut. So let's say I live at **498F Example St, Realtown, Ohio, 12345** I'd set in my phone **498F** as a shortcut. This is a sequence I'm quite unlikely to type in any other context other than sending my address. So when I type it, it will fill out the other details as a suggestion! You could even go one step further and include the Google Maps link if you really wanted! Or maybe have **498L** as the link version or something! Idk # Specific Memes or Jokes I send certain emoji combinations relatively often, so sometimes is nice to have a nonsense shortcut for them, and have it suggest the emojis rather than searching for them. Quite useful especially in apps that don't support the discord style `:joy:` emoji replacement, such as Signal. # Deep Links & Weird Links You can setup quick links for anything, such as how I do for [[Jamf - Self Service - Deep Links]]! I also use this for Jump Desktop, RDP, and many other random things! Anything that accepts a custom protocol URL.
